A little history of why Dolphin is on patrol. Please read the post below quoted from a member of the www.insidepoinciana.org bulletin board.
This is a notice for all residents of Polk County Village 3 of Poinciana.
( will post this in Polk County Sheriff board also )
After many months of discussions amongst the Polk County residents and Sheriff Grady Judd and the Polk County Sheriff’s Department who attend the monthly meetings at the community center, a CAP (Citizens Assisted Patrol) for Village 3 has been established with the cooperation of the Sheriff’s department.
Also did you know that Village 7 has had one of these programs in place and running for at least 8 months now.
This is a program run by volunteers ( yes volunteers ) who are not paid in any way for their services in both Village 3 and 7 who want to assist their local law enforcement in keeping their neighborhoods safe.
They have a marked patrol cruiser from Polk County in each village that is specifically marked Citizens Assisted Patrol with a yellow lightbar on the roof of the vehicle instead of the red and blue lightbar seen on regular police cruisers and have gone through a specific training class that is sanctioned by the Polk County Sheriff and is offered to any resident of Polk County by the way that would like to be involved in helping patrol the neighborhood/village to help deter possible criminal activities. Should they spot something suspicious, they are in direct contact with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office who will dispatch a deputy to investigate.
These citizens have no authority ( ie arrest or detaining ) at all. They are merely observers who can be the eyes for the law enforcement sheriff until they arrive.
The meetings are every 3rd tuesday of the month held at the community center where they come together with the Sheriff’s deputies who are from the Lake Wales substation but are very actively involved in the Polk side of Poinciana to discuss the program. There is usually a guest speaker in attendance as well.
This is a good program having gone to the meetings and sitting there and listening to not only residents who are not part of the program talk about it who have seen the patrol car in their neighborhood but also from some of the active participants as well.
They are actively trying to get more residents involved in the program. There is strength in numbers and this is a great program to be in volved in if you have some extra time and are looking to volunteer and at the same time give you a good feeling that you are helping to keep your neighborhood safe not only for adults but for children as well.
