Poinciana Mom Santiago-Haskins’ charged Third Degree Murder and Child Neglect

Polk County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives have arrested Michelle Santiago-Haskins, 10/13/1981, 1748 Pompano Drive, and charged her in the death of her 10 month old infant son.
As you know, on Monday, December 17, 2007, around 7:30 p.m., Polk County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 1748 Pompano Drive in Kissimmee in regards to a baby who had possibly drowned in a bathtub.
When deputies arrived they learned that the baby’s mother, Michelle Santiago, was preparing her children for a bath and had put her 10-month-old baby Michael Torres (DOB 2/7/07) in the bathtub and turned the water on. She then went to prepare dinner and told her other two children, 8 and 5, to go and bathe with the infant.
The baby’s 8-year-old brother found Michael unresponsive and floating in the bathtub. The 8-year-old picked up the infant and carried him to their mother who began CPR. When deputies arrived, they continued to perform CPR on Michael.
The baby was taken by ambulance to Osceola Regional Medical Center, but then later was transported to Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando. The baby died this morning, Wednesday, December 19, 2007, at approximately 9 am.
Santiago-Haskins is being booked into the Polk County Jail this evening. When a photo is available, I will forward it via email. Thank you for your patience.

This baby’s drowning was the 3rd in the same week. I believe she will be made an example of although all such drownings should be carefully investigated. Not saying she should or should not be charged, just think the awareness has been heightened.

Well the same instance here, has ended With the R.C.M.P saying that it was human error, and no charges will be laid. I sure hope people don’t take this as an open door around here to drown their babies, sure would put a damper on the shaken baby crowd.
I hope your justice system works more to the favor of the victim, and not the criminal.

Being that I have a little insight information I thought I pqss it on to you guys. I don’t think that this was a planned execution by no means. I also don’t think that it was stupidity. I know that there has been many complaints made to DCF about the mother and obviously DCF failed to see the neglect that all these children were under. I think that the mother needs to be punished to the furthest extent of the law as it is obvious with the cocaine found that she was not sober when all this happens so I believe that it was complete neglect and no one else should be held acountable fo rthis but her. I hope that she spends a lot of time behind bars and hope that the state never gives her the right to her other children again.

If what the person wrote is true and DCF failed to see that there was a problem they should also be held accountable not to say that she shouldn’t be punished. I believe they should lock her up and throw away the key. I know part of the father’s family (who did not live with the mom) and they have been destroyed by this event. He was such a precious baby, always happy and always had a smile for those around him. It is really sad that Michael is no longer here. This is what everyone should look at before they take her side, she was always careless and would leave her kids with anyone willing to babysit so she can get high.

michelle what you have done has destroyed me my heart is in a million pieces. i’m an emotional wreck.If only my son had listened to me and never given you a baby. not to say that i didn’t love him because i adored him. He was my sunshine and because of your neglect and your ways he is no longer here. i cry every day and relive this nightmare over and over again. all i ask of you is to please,please leave my family alone.

aww that is so sad when i knew michelle she was not a great mom but she was ok i guess in some kind of way she loved nana and jessi and i cant believe this ever happened

We have an almost mirror image incident here in Peace River, Alberta. Mother leaves 11 month old baby in bath with older sibling, goes off on the phone leaving them, and husband finds baby unresponsive. Baby has died in hospital, brain death. But no one is being charged….why is there such a difference between our laws… I realize Narcotics were found in your case, but there are no charges for that, Murder and Neglect, should there not be an investigation atleast out here on this babies preventable death. Since this mother has found much time to blog in facebook, and even print her babies furneral plans on face book, I really do question whether or not this baby died as a result of pure stupidity, or a well planned execution.
