GREENWICH TWP. The son of the township man police say killed his estranged wife in Logan over the weekend before taking his own life also met his demise by his own hand almost eight years ago.

Walter Oswald Jr., 27, whose last address was listed as the first block of West Vine Street, was the target of several police investigations in 2001, including three murder charges in Florida and two armed robberies locally.

Oswald’s father, 56-year-old Walter Oswald, is believed to have killed his wife, 52-year-old Donna Harbula, sometime over the weekend. Harbula was not Oswald Jr.’s mother.

Gloucester County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Bernie Weisenfeld said autopsies conducted Wednesday on Harbula as well as Walter Oswald Sr. determined both sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head.

Harbula’s death is listed as a homicide, Oswald’s a suicide.

The younger Oswald was wanted by authorities in Florida for allegedly killing a friend and his dog in Haines City on March 28, 2001 and for killing an elderly couple during a home invasion robbery in Poinciana on April 1 of that year.

Oswald then drove the Cadillac DeVille belonging to the murdered couple back to New Jersey, where Camden Police encountered him.

Oswald had an active warrant for his arrest for a violation of probation out of Camden County. He also allegedly committed two armed robberies at a Amoco station in Paulsboro and one in Woodstown days before his death.

According to police reports at the time and a Times article written after Oswald’s death, police in Camden spotted a Cadillac with Florida tags at Fifth and York streets and began pursuit the morning of April 2, 2001.

Ignoring traffic lights, Oswald led authorities through Camden and into Cherry Hill along Route 38, then south onto Route 41, east on Route 70 and then south on Interstate 295.

With Camden police and New Jersey state troopers continuing their pursuit, he finally drove onto Route 168 south to Clements Bridge Road past Deptford Mall. The Cadillac hit a Ford Escort stopped at a traffic light on Almonesson Road, spun across the intersection and came to rest on the lawn of a shopping center.

Officers made a move to circle the car, but before they could approach, Oswald took a loaded .44-caliber Magnum and shot himself in the head.

On Tuesday morning, the Gloucester County Special Weapons and Tactics Unit was dispatched to Oswald Jr.’s former West Vine Street residence, where his father, Oswald Sr., lived. Greenwich police had spent the night staking out the home.

After several attempts to make contact with the elder Oswald, the SWAT unit entered to find him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Weisenfeld said the time of death of Oswald Sr. and Harbula cannot be determined by an autopsy.

Grandparents meet a need
That no one else can fill;
They’re always kind and gentle;
They love you and always will.

They have plenty of time to listen,
To encourage and to care;
When others are too busy,
Grandparents are always there.

They have delicious foods;
There’s always something cooking;
They feed you scrumptious tidbits,
When no one else is looking.

They take you special places;
They’re never in a hurry.
They soothe you when you’re troubled,
And help you not to worry.

They buy you things you want,
Even things that you don’t need;
“Do what makes them happy!”
Is every grandparent’s creed.

They focus on your good points,
And overlook each flaw;
How could we do without
Our grandma and grandpa?

Thank you, Grandpa and Grandma,
For giving life a special shine;
I’m glad to have grandparents,
And happy you both are mine!
LOVE ALWAYS YOUR GRAND KIDS
