May 24-June 6Osceola County -Osceola County Sheriff’s deputies are participating in Click It or Ticket, a nationwide campaign to crack down on seat belt non-use and to reduce highway fatalities. The campaign is conducted annually by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) in conjunction with hundreds of law enforcement officials, highway safety representatives and safety advocates. This year’s campaign begins today and runs through June 6, 2010.

According to the NHTSA, seat belts are the most effective safety feature available in vehicles today; still nearly one in five Americans fail to regularly wear a seat belt when driving or riding in a motor vehicle. In 2008, seat belts saved 13,250 lives nationwide.

Local motorists should be prepared for stepped up Click It or Ticket activities that will take place around the clock. The Click It or Ticket campaign relies on strict enforcement and public education as a means to help save lives on Osceola County’s roadways.

Osceola County, Florida – Osceola County Fire Chief Rich Collins and staff will host a series of community meetings at local fire stations throughout the county in May and June to explain Osceola County Fire Rescue’s budget, levels of service and the proposed fire assessment fees for 2010-2011.

“This is a great opportunity for citizens to come out to their local fire station, meet with staff, and receive answers to their questions about the proposed fire fee,” said Chief Collins. “Some mistakenly think the fire assessment fee is a new fee but it has actually been in place since 1989 as a fair and equitable means of providing funding for fire rescue services.”

Community meetings will be held on the following dates. Citizens are invited to attend a meeting at any fire station location. Tours will be available at the conclusion of each meeting.

• May 27th at 6:00 p.m. at Poinciana Fire Station 65 – 1201 Cypress Parkway
